Metal was never my thing until it was...
Winter is here and it goes by the name Lord of the Lost

For many years I would tell people I don’t like much metal and for the most part it was true. When I said “metal” I was referring to “nu-metal” and “hair metal” but I always loved me some Black Sabbath and Judas Priest. In the past couple years I’ve really been digging metal from Europe that has an epic and a viking or pagan feel to it. I saw the Folk Fest of the North last year and became a fan.
This year I added another band to that list, Lord of the Lost. Hailing from Germany, this was Lord of the Lost’s first time playing Detroit on their Dark Winter tour. Lead singer, Chris Harms, has tons of charisma and most of the time he sings in more of a goth vibe but he can do the guttural stuff too. I like that he can be both menacing and fun. I think this is a hard thing for American metal bands to pull off, it seems like they have to be one or the other. He got the whole crowd jumping up and down with him but then he could still give a piercing look that chilled down to the bone.
My favorite part of seeing a band like this is when they get the crowd to chant “Fight! Fight! Fight” along with them like we’re outside the gates ready to storm and pillage. The other bands at the show, the Birthday Massacre and Wednesday 13 also had excellent sets. I’ll do something on them soon. I took photos at the show and have a different review up at Shots from the Show.

I dove into stoner and doom metal a few years ago and have been a fan since. I’m also discovering some excellent Japanese prog-metal bands.
I can’t stand “nu-metal.” It all sounds like they’re trying to be the next Tool or Korn.
